Several City Council members said Thursday that they favor a ban on businesses that host sex parties for swingers, potentially setting up a bruising legal battle with the owner of a Union Street inn where such parties are held on most weekends.
Meanwhile, in a move to prevent the city from regulating his business, owner Bob Alexson said he plans to stop charging mandatory fees to attend the parties and instead will accept donations.
"I'll be like a politician. I'll just ask for a donation like the politicians do. Or we'll do like the priests and pass the plate for the offering," Alexson said. "How are they going to enforce it?"
Lawmakers took no formal action to impose such a ban that would prevent the Union Street Bed & Breakfast from charging for sex parties. But after a meeting with neighbors who oppose the inn, a number spoke in favor of an outright ban instead of a change in zoning laws that would force such businesses into industrial zones.
"We have to get people to switch away from the cheap buck, the cheap thrill," said Gary McCarthy. "If it takes a complete ban, then we should move in that direction."
