Volkswagen Teams with Google on Navigation System "Volkswagen AG's American unit on Friday said it is working on a prototype vehicle which features Google Inc.'s satellite mapping software to give drivers a bird's eye view of the road ahead.
The two companies are working with the graphics chipmaker Nvidia Corp. to build an in-car navigation map system and a three-dimensional display so passengers can recognize where they are in relation to the surrounding topography."
Volkswagen's been becoming friends with Google. Well, as much as Google is in the news...who the fuck wouldnt. I would be their friend if they let me. Anyway, VW in-vehicle nav and Google Satellite imagery is now going to be combined in a VW prototype. The two services would seem to be a perfect match, but they need a little extra help from chipmaker/third-wheel Nvidia in order to handle the intense 3D imagery that results from their courtship. The project is being spearheaded by Volkswagen's Palo Alto-based Electronics Research Laboratory, and aims to provide drivers with Google Earth-like birds-eye views of upcoming terrain. Suits at VW say there are no definite plans to commercialize this technology in production vehicles, but we bet that we'll be seeing some uber-cutesy Googlers Wanted commercials sooner rather than later. I'm personally am looking forward to this product and i'm sure others are too.
